Data Suggests British ISP Block of Pirate Bay Ineffective

After only a week of being blocked by British ISPs after a court order, a major internet provider in the UK has said that peer-to-peer traffic has returned to just below normal pre-block traffic levels. This comes as no surprise to many critics of the ban who pointed out that tech-savvy users, the ones who most frequently use peer-to-peer networks, would quickly find ways to circumvent the ban.

British music industry executives have defended the move, however. The CEO of the music industry trade body in Britain announced that they would, in fact, pursue similar action in the future, saying they would “take further steps to deal with illegal sites that line their pockets by ripping off everyone who makes the music we enjoy.”

The particular ISP, which released its traffic information on condition of anonymity, said that peer-to-peer traffic had peaked during the court proceedings, in large part due to the increased media coverage. Immediately after the ban became enforced, the ISP said P2P activity dropped by more than 11% when compared to average traffic levels. A spokesperson said that they “saw a fall at the time of the block made more dramatic by the increasing amount of such traffic in the weeks leading up to it, but volumes are already pretty much back to where they were before.” However, they stressed that the figures dealt only with the volume of traffic, not the number of users, meaning that it is possible that hardcore file-sharers have simply become more prolific while casual users have been discouraged from using peer-to-peer services. Additionally, the data is unable to tell what is being downloaded or from where it is being downloaded from, meaning that users might be using sites other than The Pirate Bay.

The leader of the Pirate Party UK, Loz Kaye, said a renewal in sharing copyrighted files was inevitable. “We’ve always said that blocking is an ineffective method,” he said. “It’s not in any way productive. Anyone who knows anything about how the internet works can get around it.” In fact, the Pirate Party UK has set up proxy servers to allow users to access The Pirate Bay even if it has been blocked by their provider.

Google TV options have kinks to work out

When it comes to getting content from the Internet on their TVs, consumers have a growing number of options, from Internet-connected TVs to game consoles to an assortment of digital set-top boxes.

Unfortunately, most of these options have a big flaw: They offer only a small slice of the movies,

The aim of Google TV is to integrate the Web with the traditional television experience. The software allows users to search both television listings and Web-based video for programs. It also allows users to browse television listings by categories, rather than by a grid of time slots and channels.

When you connect the Revue to your TV, it gets daisy-chained to your set-top box so that both are plugged into the same port on your television. That means you don't have to change inputs on your TV to switch between traditional and Internet content. It also allows Google TV devices to offer a picture-in-picture feature that lets users surf the Web on their TVs while watching a television program.

Like other Internet-connected living room devices, Google TV gadgets allow users to watch videos, listen to music and view pictures streamed over the Internet. Users can rent and buy movies and TV shows from Amazon.com, listen to Internet radio from Pandora and watch slide shows from Google's

And there's more content to come. Google plans to bring the Android application marketplace to Google TV next year, allowing users to add to the handful of apps the devices ship with.

But as promising as Google TV is, it feels half-baked. Unless you have pay-TV service from Dish Network, its integration with traditional television is limited at best. While you can use the Google TV software to search for and tune in programs that are airing right now, you can't use it to set up a recording on your DVR or to search for and view an on-demand program from your pay-TV operator. Instead, you'll have to switch off the Google TV interface and switch back to using the one for your set-top box.

Similarly, when you use the picture-in-picture feature, the traditional television programming shows up as a small box in the corner of your screen that you can't enlarge or move around. That makes it almost useless, because the images within it are so small they're hard to discern.

Also disappointing is the search feature, which is often confusing. When searching on the home screen for a particular program, you have to choose where or how you want to search. The search feature doesn't allow you to search across multiple options at once - such as the TV programming guide, Amazon's list of on-demand programs or a general Web search. The default is to search just the videos that are available on the Web, which is not particularly helpful if what you are really looking for is a live program.

The biggest drawback of Google TV, though, is limited content. The big Hollywood players, such as ABC, NBC and CBS and their associated cable networks, as well as Hulu, have generally blocked Google TV devices from accessing the videos they make available on the Web. So in terms of video content, you are left with far less than what you can get through Roku's digital media players, the top-end of which costs just $100, or one-third the cost of the Revue and one-fourth the cost of Sony's Google TV Blu-ray player.

You can't get general Web pages on Roku devices, but you may not care. Surfing the Web from the couch - even on a big-screen TV - is not an enjoyable experience. The type's too small to read comfortably, and links are hard to click on from a distance. Web surfing is much more suited to the PC on your desk or the smart phone or tablet in your hands.

So at least for now, Google TV is underwhelming and overpriced. But stay tuned; it's sure to get better and there are plenty of other companies trying to come up with the long-awaited ideal solution for connecting the TV and the Internet.

Hammer Storage Pounds Out 'Disruptive' 1TB Appliance

The new device resembles a microwave oven, offers remote access and provides the functionality of a network storage device at a price that may boggle some minds.

Consumer/small-office storage vendor Hammer Storage on March 22 introduced a new appliance resembling a microwave oven that provides 1TB of data storage - for a retail price of $499.

The appliance, called Myshare 1TB, is the first release in a new product line now being developed by Hammer, a division of Bell Microproducts. Myshare comes with two SATA II hard drives along with two USB ports to centralize printers and external hard drives, a company spokesperson said.

Myshare offers remote access via IP/TCP ports; all content stored on the unit can be made accessible from anywhere through a Web GUI. Selective access to sharing folders can be set up by the administrator.

When used as a network storage appliance, Myshare can be accessed whether or not the computers are on, the spokesperson said. It plugs into the network through a gigabit interface and can sit under any home router or switch, eliminating the need for externally attached storage, add-on internal disk drives, removable media, print servers and remote storage.

Myshare comes with RAID levels 0, 1 and JBOD software to provide protection choices, such as mirroring data. Content stored on Myshare is secured from online intruders with SSL certificates and can be configured with multiple user and group permissions.

For small businesses with a domain server, Myshare can tie into the domain, thus enabling the use of the same password and access that is already in place.

"We've tested the Hammer products in our test labs, and they're great quality - they're bulletproof," said Jon Toigo, an independent storage analyst and consultant who blogs at the popular storage analysis site, DrunkenData.com .

"Bell Microproducts - the parent company of Hammer - distributes 70 percent of all the hard drives in the world outside of PCs," Toigo said. "They work with Seagate, HP, EMC, IBM - all the major companies. They can use their vast resources to build their own inexpensive storage unit like this.

"The cabinets are really pretty ... they look pretty enough for the home consumer, but they have enough scalability and capacity to go into more fashionable business offices as well."

Wireless access to all content

When connected to a wireless router, Myshare allows laptop users to access content or print without plugging in. Users can also back up their files, photos and other data wirelessly to a Myshare unit.

Myshare enables users to share digital content within the home and among different computer platforms, including PC, Mac and Linux workstations. Content trapped in an individual computer becomes available to all those connected to the home network, the spokesperson said.

Once plugged into Myshare, USB printers and storage devices - including flash memory sticks - can also be shared over the home network, the spokesperson said.

"Digital home storage needs are growing exponentially, and this trend is creating a real demand for affordable, simple network storage solutions that offer ease-of-use that is similar to that found in common household appliances," said Jerry Kagele, Bell Microproducts' president of North American distribution, said in San Jose, Calif.

Myshare is designed as a plug-and-play device - users can simply plug it into a router and begin storing and sharing immediately, the spokesperson said. While other network storage devices require that software be installed on each computer, Myshare does not. A one button feature copies files from another storage device or digital camera directly into a Myshare folder.

Why Myshare is disruptive - especially in the channel

The Hammer Myshare is disruptive to the sales channel in a big way, Toigo said.

"It's disruptive and revolutionary in the sense that most distributors in the market are hesitant to go head-to-head with their channel partners," Toigo said. "Bell derives an enormous amount of money from distributing pre-made systems that come out of EMC and folks like that. And now they're in direct competition with them with their own array products. That is a fundamental shift."

Major-name storage vendors typically mark their arrays up tremendously - as much as 3000 percent in some cases, Toigo said.

"I think the Bell approach makes a hell of a lot of sense for a lot of reasons - for consumers, it's extremely beneficial," Toigo said. "When you look at the cost to manufacture a 20TB array, it's about $5,200. When a tier 2 vendor - I'm talking about anybody who isn't a three-letter acronym - comes to market with a 2TB array, you're talking about anywhere between $17,000 and $20,000 by the time it reaches the customer.

"When a name-brand vendor - with a three-letter acronym - gets a hold of it, you can add a '1' in front of that," Toigo added.

Certainly, big-name vendors contend they have better maintenance, support and value-add functionality to go with their higher prices, he said.

"The fact of the matter is, at that price point, I can afford to replace the unit with a brand new one if anything were to go wrong," Toigo said. "And the value-add functionality can all be bought from third-party vendors. It's all taking advantage of SATA and SAS standards, which are de facto standards at this point."

Toigo said he has a client that is a large telecommunications company, and they were complaining recently to him that they have to pay the licenses for all their EMC software, yet they end up using only 10 percent of the functionality.

"But they still have to pay the license fees annually - on 100 percent of the functionality," Toigo said. "So when is value-add not adding value? The guy said, 'You know it'd be really great if we could just buy the basic box from a reputable manufacturer, who'd then service and support it without any problem, and then we could cobble together, from all the available software out there, those specific functions that we really need.

"And that's what this platform - Myshare - allows you to do."

Toigo said he never "takes - consulting - money" from companies whose products he analyzes.

Myshare, priced at $499, is available now at retail stores, online retailers, and directly from the Hammer Storage Web site .

Dell employees divulged the information, including pictures, on internet forums over the past weekend. Whether or not the leak was sanctioned as part of a viral campaign or just corporate insiders showing off has yet to be determined. According to Notebook Review, the laptop is due to be released within the next few weeks.

Dell acquired Alienware earlier this year, but both companies continue to release competing products.

Apple Developing Software to Combat 'Flashback' Malware

Apple is developing software to remove the malware Flashback from Macintosh computers. Although long regarded as a safe haven from viruses, Macintosh may never recover this image in the public eye. In February of 2011, a malware known as ‘Flashback’ began infecting thousands of Macs by exploiting vulnerability in the version of Java imbedded in Mac OS X. An earlier variant of this malware appeared during September of that year, disguising itself as an installer for Adobe Flash.Last week, Apple released two updates of Java to patch the weakness which allowed Mac users to get infected without even clicking on anything whatsoever. These updates will help prevent computers from getting infected, but those which already contain the virus cannot be helped. On Tuesday, Apple revealed that it was developing software to remove this malware from computers infected by it. “Apple is developing software that will detect and remove the Flashback malware,” was the statement given by Apple on its website support blog. No ETA was given. The arrival of this software will be a relief to the users who are already infected – hundreds of thousands, according to antivirus company Dr. Web.Apple might be feeling the brunt of its long years of stagnancy and inexperience with viruses. In an attempt to disable the servers that Flashback depends on to use, the corporation attempted to shut down Dr. Web’s servers, which had been disguised as the Flashback servers in order to gain information about the Flashback malware. Critics suggest that Apple’s inexperience in security issues caused this blunder, which has fallen under heavy criticism. The development of software to remove Flashback may be an important step in preparing Apple for possible malware yet to come.

Apple charges for required free service in Italy

Apple is constantly going after other companies for patent infringements, and, ironically, consumers are constantly going after Apple for consumer rights infringements. In a recent article we discussed that Chinese consumers were unsatisfied with Apple’s support in China, and now it’s the Italian’s turn to take a bite out of the Apple pie.

It is the law in Italy for consumers to have the right to get two years of free assistance on electronics and durable goods, but it just so happens that Apple is only offering one year free and consumer has to pay to get support in the second year. Basically, Italians that are paying for an extra year of support from Apple need to get their money back.

According to Reuters, various Apple divisions in Europe have already been imposed with fines of 900,000 euros, and if Apple continues to not comply with Italian authorities then another 300,000 euros will be imposed. Apple has 30 days to respond to the AGCM’s compliance request.

    ASRock launches Z68 mini-ITX board

If youve been waiting for an affordable Z68 mini-ITX motherboard, then your wait should be over, as ASRock has launched its Z68M-ITX/HT motherboard which should prove to be one of the more wallet friendly mini-ITX Z68 boards out there. That said, its hardly a crowded market space at the moment with Zotac having the only other two models currently available.

As this is a mini-ITX board, the Z68M-ITX/HT is fairly feature light with only a single x16 PCI Express slot and four SATA ports, as well as a pair of headers for two USB 2.0 ports. The real action happens around the back where we have a PS/2 port, four USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, an eSATA port, a Gigabit Ethernet port, 7.1-channel audio with optical S/PDIF out and a DVI, D-Sub and HDMI port.

ASRock also supplies an infrared dongle and a Windows MCE compatible remote with the board which is a nice added extra considering that a fair few of these boards are likely to end up in HTPC type systems. You also get a copy of Lucid Logix Virtu graphics switching software in the box. No word on pricing as yet, but considering that ASRocks H67 version of this board is one of the more affordable H67 mini-ITX boards, wed expect the Z68M-ITX/HT to end up being only slightly more expensive.

Apple iPad Mini to launch this October

In a recent investment report from Pacific Crest, analysts predict that Apple will launch a 7.85’’ iPad mini this October priced at around $299.

Rumors of a 7’’ budget slate from Apple have been on the table for a while, and they’re still rumors. However, many OEMs have been either rumored or confirmed to be developing and launching 7-inchers, so it’s no surprise that Apple don’t want other tablet makers to cannibalize their brand.

“Based on our supply checks, we expect Apple to launch a 7.85” iPad in October. We anticipate an entry-level 7.85” iPad with 8GB of NAND capacity to price at $299,” states the report.

The late Steve Jobs, was an opponent of a 7-incher, but apparently Tim Cook, Apple’s current CEO, have something else in mind. An article from Tab Times a couple of months ago rumored that the R&D in Cupertino was testing a 7.85’’ tablet.

Also in the report, analysts suggest that the current gen iPad will receive some upgrades which may include a repositioning of the camera, improved touchscreen interface, reduced weight, and improved battery life. As for the iPad 2, the firm predicts that its shelf-life will end with the launch of the iPad Mini.

Apple awarded patents for OpenCL and dock with moveable connector

The U.S. Patent and Trademark office has awarded Apple 25 more patents, two of which include Apple’s OpenCL, and a moveable connector in iDevices docking systems.

Without going into too many details in regard to Apple’s OpenCL, the OpenCL patent covers the Apple’s hardware and software leverage of CPUs and GPUs parallel processing. Supposedly, “traditional” GPUs and CPUs are configured with different programming environment, and therefore its difficult for an application to fully utilize the available processing powers of both GPUs and CPUs.

“A computer implemented method comprising: determining, in response to an API (Application Programming Interface) request from an application running in a host processing unit, a total number of threads to concurrently execute one or more executable codes compiled from a single source for one or more target processing units, the API request including a global thread number having a multi-dimensional value; verifying if a thread group size has been specified by a particular one of the executable codes, the particular executable code to be executed in a particular one of the one or more target processing units, the thread group size to partition the total number of threads; in response to verifying the thread group size has not been specified by a particular one of the executable codes, determining the thread group size for the particular target processing unit based on current resource usage status of the particular target processing unit; and loading the particular executable code of the one or more executable codes to be executed in a thread group of the thread group size concurrently in the particular target processing unit.”

According to Patently Apple, OpenCL allows:

“…an application to perform a task using any available processing resources, such as CPUs and one or more GPUs, capable of performing the task.”

The moveable connector patent for iDevices docking is straightforward. The connector portion of an iDevice dock has a swivel-like mechanism that allows the connector to move back and forth.

ASRock first with Q77 motherboard, a little bit too early in fact

Intels Q77 chipset isnt expected to launch for another week and a half or so, but that hasnt stopped ASRock from launching its first product based on the chipset, the Q77M vPro motherboard. As the name inclines, this is a motherboard for business users and as such it comes with Intels Small Business Advantage in the box.

Intels SBA is a software package that makes it easy for small businesses to manage their PCs without a dedicated IT support team, or at least thats the idea behind the software. It features a software monitor that keeps software up to date and working, a backup and restore application, a USB port blocker that prevents unauthorized USB devices to be used with the computer, a power saving feature and a "PC Health Center" which performs maintenance tasks on the system during non-working hours.

So what about the motherboard? Well, the Q77M vPro doesnt look all that special, its a fairly typical mATX motherboard with one x16 PCI Express 3.0 slot, one x16 PCI Express 2.0 slot with four lanes of bandwidth and two PCI slots. It also has the standard set of four SATA 3Gbps and two SATA 6Gbps ports, a front USB 3.0 header, as well as headers for four USB 2.0 ports, a serial port, a parallel port and a TPM module.

The rear port layout is fairly basic with a PS/2 port, six USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, Intel Gigabit LAN – this is a requirement for the SBA software to work – 5.1-channel audio and a DisplayPort, DVI and D-sub connector. The choice of DisplayPort over HDMI clearly makes this a motherboard targeted for more professional use, but its really the only thing that makes this board stand out a bit from the crowd.

The Q77M vPro is already on sale for around US$125 (S$160) which is a pretty steep price premium over something like ASRocks own H77 Pro4-M which offers a better feature set for a mere US$90 (S$115), so unless you really need the Intel SBA software and the DisplayPort connector, there are plenty of more affordable options out there.

Assassin's Creed III will feature new multiplayer content every month

The upcoming third installment of Assassins Creed will offer new content each month as part of a much more extensive multiplayer experience.

The multiplayer game will feature story much more than previous titles and will see the Animus being turned into a commercial product that consumers can go to for reliving the past. This gives Ubisoft a perfect opportunity to launch monthly updates as the story unfolds. The updates will be locked behind challenges that players need to complete and there will be new challenges and new content, including files and videos, available each month. It is not clear how extensive this new content will be in terms of actual gameplay, but it should keep gamers busy once the initial singe-player story has been played.Multiplayer features will include a new hunting co-op mode called Wolfpack, where players need to find and kill people in a timed challenge, and a four-player versus four-player team mode called Domination. Wolfpack will feature more advanced AI than weve seen in previous games, with a variety of NPC “personalities” that make some fighters, some cowards, and everything else between. These modes will also feature environmental effects, such as visibility-reducing weather, and conveniently-placed bottles and axes that can be utilised by players for a special kill, so the enhancements to the multiplayer experience wont simply be eye-candy.Assassins Creed III launches at the end of October for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and late November for PC.Source: Joystiq

    ATI HyperMemory Technology

ATI today announced HyperMemory, an innovative technology that reduces PCsystem costs by allowing its visual processors to use system memory for graphicsprocessing. HyperMemory uses the high-speed bi-directional data transfercapabilities of PCI Express to store and access graphics data in system memory, leading to less of a dependence on graphics memory and ultimately a loweroverall system cost.

Under previous interconnect standards, the data transfer between the visualprocessor and the CPU was not fast enough for real-time graphics applications,so graphics cards have shipped with up to 256 MB of dedicated graphics memory tostore textures and rendering data required by the graphics processor.HyperMemory gives ATI and its board partners the option to deliver cards withless on-board memory and instead use system memory to handle the graphicsstorage requirements. The result is a lower overall PC cost for the same greatgraphics performance.

HyperMemory uses intelligent memory allocation algorithms to optimize the use ofavailable local memory and ensure critical components are placed in fast localmemory when required. Optimal assignment of data to local or system storage isdetermined dynamically to ensure the best user experience. HyperMemory alsoincreases the performance of system bus data transfers, making accessing systemmemory faster than ever before.

AMD Samsung Series 5 laptop have more GPU power than Intel Series 5

People looking into Samsung’s Series 5 laptops should take a look at the AMD series. While the 13’’ i5 Ivy-Bridge Series 5 will certainly outperform (clock for clock) the AMD platform in the CPU department, the refreshed 13’’ AMD Series 5 has the Radeon HD 7500G—which is much more attractive than an Intel HD 4000.

Most average consumers will be content with a laptop that has an Intel HD 4000, but it may not get the job done for casual gamers who want to do multimedia intensive activities such as 3D gaming. Web contents such as flash videos are very CPU intensive, but many video games are CPU and GPU intensive—thus, Samsung may have done them self a favor by adding some more GPU horses to their Series 5 laptops.

Not only does the 13’’ AMD Series 5 laptop have more GPU power, but it’s also cheaper. The Intel Core i5 Ivy Bridge’s premium comes at the expense of the graphical processing aspect. The 13’’ AMD version of the Series 5 is $100 cheaper than its Intel counterpart, and for $699 you can have a system that is balanced between CPU and GPU.

Asus Ares Support in Catalyst 10.3a

Out of curiosity, we took apart the latest installment of beta Catalyst just to see what AMD has up its sleeves. The Asus Ares "monster," which has already gained legendary status before hitting the shelves, turned up in this copy of 10.3a Catalyst.
Of course we did not find any Asus product brochure for the Ares hidden in here, but the "DEV_689C" device ID used by the Ares is shared with the Radeon HD 5900 series.
It sure ain't bad for Asus, having official driver support for a deviant design.

[Rumour] AMD Phenom II X6 clocks revealed

As we have known for a while now, the Phenom II X6 CPUs will be releasedin three variants - 1035T, 1055T and 1075T at TDP of 95W, 125W and 125Wrespectively. The 1055T is expected to ship at 95W at a later stage.

Theclock speeds are the last part of the jigsaw which was originallyrumoured to be at 2.4, 2.6 GHz and 2.8 GHz respectively. It seems likeAMD has beat those expectations by featuring clock speeds of 2.6 GHz forthe 1035T, 2.8 GHz for 1055T and 3.0 GHz for 1075T.

AMD will introduce a feature reminiscent of Intel's turbo boost, where clock speed of select cores will be boosted when not multi-threading. Details of this technology are obscure at this stage, but such a feature is a must for a heavily multi-core CPU especially since it has become a standard for Intel's CPUs.

A 3.2 GHz X6 variant seems likely in the future. If AMD chooses to release a 140W CPU - like it's previous top range Phenom II X4 CPUs - we can perhaps even go as high as 3.4 GHz with a future stepping. Clearly, Thuban is more power efficient than the quad-core Deneb it is based on.

The Phenom II X6 CPUs will of course be in a different league from Intel's Core i7 980X. However, the Phenom II X6 products might just a great alternative to Intel's Core i5/i7 quad cores, especially for users who use multi-threaded applications extensively.

The first three Phenom II X6 CPUs are expected to hit retail towards the end of April.
